Current Projects
See what the NEAAAL Lab is currently working on

Sylvester Manor
Ongoing work at Sylvester Manor includes a survey of the Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground, research on the 19th century at the site, collections and database management, and the re-analysis of various artifact collections for student theses.

Collections and Database Management
Over the past two years, grad students working within and outside of the NEAAAL lab have been working to gain a better understanding of the extent of the Sylvester Manor legacy collection. This has involved sorting and scanning field paperwork from 1998 to 2007, as well as organizing the online collections database connected to this site, re-cataloguing boxes of artifacts, and reading through field documents to gain a better understanding of what exactly was excavated during each field season.

Nantucket Relational Database
As a part of continuing research on the New Guinea community on Nantucket, NEAAAL is creating a relational database that will identify every resident of the neighborhood from its rise in the late 18th century to its decline in the late 19th following the collapse of the whaling industry. The database chiefly draws from census and deed records and will facilitate analysis of the demographics of the community of New Guinea as well as yield valuable information about labor, trends in land ownership, participation in commercial activities, and other social institutions. This project is being conducted with members of the Fiske Center’s Digital Archaeology Laboratory under the guidance of Dr. John Steinberg and Dr. Douglas Bolender.

Public Outreach
A continuously important aspect of our research that we are constantly trying to improve upon is our communication and collaboration with stakeholder communities of the sites that we excavate and study.
If you are a stakeholder or descendant of any of the sites or histories that we work on, please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions!
